Engaging Blog Entry from Author B.D. Lawrence

It’s been some time since I’ve posted a blog entry. I need to get back into the swing. While reading through other authors blog sites for potential books to add to my reading list, I came across one that was very engaging written by B. D. Lawrence as bdlawerence.com. It’s also something I’ve considered personally regarding the works of authors where characters are similarly written from story to story. There are story tropes, and common across the genres. And there are character tropes - evil genius wanting to take over the world, sometimes with a maniacal laugh; down and out on his luck detective who catches that one unique case, etc… Wouldn’t it be interesting if a sewer worker came across an item that becomes the McGuffin (sp) to an interesting story. Maybe he’s working and someone throws a gun down a storm drain. The sewer worker thinks it could have been used in the commission of a crime. Why else throw it away? He climbs out one of the nearby sewer entrances and notices a police car. He goes to report the gun, then realizes it was the policeman who threw it away. What the worker becomes embroiled in…let the author’s imagination run with it. Farfetched? Yep. But the author should hopefully develop a grounded, yet intriguing and fantastical story to engage the reader.
